Broccoli Sprouts Reduce Risk of Stomach Ulcers 

Research from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine 

Eating 2.5 ounces of broccoli sprouts each day reduced the risk of stomach ulcers and therefore, potentially the risk of stomach cancer, in a study of Japanese men. Broccoli consumption is known to decrease the risk of breast cancer, prostate cancer, colon cancer, liver cancer, esophagus cancer, bladder cancer and lung cancer. The newest study of broccoli sprouts adds the benefit of killing ulcer causing H. pylori and decreasing the risk of stomach cancer. H. pylori bacteria stomach infection is a well known risk factor for stomach cancer. 

This small study included 48 people infected with H. pylori. Half of the participant ate 70 grams (2.5 ounces) of broccoli sprouts with sulforaphane. The other half of the participants ate the same quantity of alfalfa sprouts which do not contain sulforaphane. After eight weeks the people who ate the broccoli sprouts had significantly lower levels of H. pylori infection. The people who ate the alfalfa sprouts did not have a reduction in H. pylori infection. Click here for full article.

B12 Reduces Canker Sores
Those suffering from canker sores have a natural option, vitamin B12.
Researchers gave 1,000 mcg of vitamin B12 or a placebo to 58 patients with canker sores every night for six months. Approximately 74% those who took the vitamin B12 went into remission. Only 32% of those on the placebo went into remission. The number of mouth sores and the length of healing time decreased throughout the study but were reduced significantly at five and six months with the vitamin B12 treatment. The researchers state, “Vitamin B12 treatment, which is simple, inexpensive, and low-risk, seems to be effective for patients suffering from canker sores, regardless of the serum vitamin B12 level. Olive Oil Kills HER2 Breast Cancer Cells
Researchers find extra-virgin olive oil might prevent HER2 breast cancer.
Two isolated chemicals from extra-virgin olive oil destroyed HER2 breast cancer cells in a laboratory study. Each chemical had different anti-cancer mechanisms. This research supports population studies showing women on the Mediterranean diet have lower incidences of breast cancer. Reference Source: BMC Cancer. 2008 Dec 18;8:377.
